Tengkera (or Tranquera, meaning “palisades”) is a unique place where different communities with deep roots live cheek by jowl. It’s known for its mixture of religious places, culture, flavours, and aromas, cursing and swearing sounds of creolised Malay spoken by Malays, Babas, Nyonyas and Chetties, Hailams, Arabs, Yemeni descendants, Hokkiens, Boyans, Javanese, Portuguese, Filipinos, Eurasians and macam-macam lagi.
Located just outside the UNESCO Core Zone there are old Dutch period buildings, Malay houses and structures. Keramats, tombs, moats, and waterlines. This exhibition will feature cultural mapping done by Melaka in Fact, in which stories and data from about these places and histories has been uploaded online, for people to contribute. There will also be talks and activities on a rich selection of topics. This exhibition is their story.
In this exhibition, Melaka in Fact shared photos, videos, stories from our interviews, objects and everything related to Tengkera and its people.
